Diesel Cans For Gas?
I have two yellow plastic containers that at one time held diesel fuel.
They are marked 'diesel fuel' Can I put gasoline into them? |
Re: Diesel Cans For Gas?
sure why not
when was the last time diesel was in them ? go to a gas station, put in a little bit on gas in each put the tops back on and swish it around abit then dump it out into a small container imho |
Re: Diesel Cans For Gas?
If I remember correctly, the color difference was just to keep people from being confused.
But...I want to store some gasoline in them and just wanted to make sure that the plastic that they are made of will hold up to gas. I know both fuels are petroleum based, but gas has 'additives'. |
Re: Diesel Cans For Gas?
Believe it or not it is actually against the law (if you get caught). I wouldn't worry about it, wouldn't even bother swishing it around. If you look at the pumps the law is listed and it may even be on the yellow tanks.

Re: Diesel Cans For Gas?
Years ago, a guy in town used to get his gas stolen all of the time. Someone was going into his garage and taking it on a weekly basis. He fixed the problem by putting some deisel/kerosene in his gasoline container. Sure enough, his gas got stolen, and the neighbors kids dirt bike burned a hole in its piston that very same day.

Re: Diesel Cans For Gas?
A little diesel in your gas won't hurt anything. Just don't forget what it is and put gasoline in your diesel. That would be bad.

So gas cans the are. |
Re: Diesel Cans For Gas?
I did the opposite a coupla weeks ago, and a SUPER GREAT SAMARITAN hustled on over to "help" me ID what I was doing. I don't believe I was terribly polite.
Maybe evening or early morning fills- morning strikes me as best. It's getting to where we need to carry a can of "Stoppit!" to buzz off all the gadflies, ya know? |
Re: Diesel Cans For Gas?
How about plastic industrial barrels...are they safe to use? I was wondering about them because they won't rust out.

Re: Diesel Cans For Gas?
I needed some diesel cans to keep fuel in for my tractor and couldn't find any, not even the blue kerosene cans. So I used gas cans for diesel until I could find a couple blue cans. Now I have 2 cans that say gas but I've wrote diesel on them, so I'll know which is what.
If you get most of the diesel out of the cans, just add gas and don't worry about the small amount, it won't hurt a gas engine at all. Just don't switch back and forth or you might get confused. |
